CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
The required certifications for eligibility are first aid and CPR with AED. A lifeguard certification is not required (See below, Phase IV).

PHASE I. POOL & TRACK.
An applicant must complete a 500 yards swim and one mile run within 17 minutes. The swim must be completed within 10 minutes. The remaining time is the difference an applicant has to complete the run.
Those with the best combined swim/run times move onward to Phase II.
PHASE II. RUN-SWIM-RUN.
This phase consists of beach running and ocean swimming. Applicants will run approximately 250 yards, enter the ocean and swim 500 meters, exit the ocean and run approximately 250 yards. This is a competitive event and performance is evaluated.
PHASE III. INTERVIEW.
Applicants are subject to an interview with the Chief of Lifeguards et al.
PHASE IV. USLA TRAINING.
The Hampton Beach Patrol and Surf Rescue is a United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) Chapter. Applicants who pass the previous Phases as described are selected to complete 40 hours of in-house USLA training from which a lifeguard certification is earned.

Returning lifeguards must sucessfully complete Phases I and II and possess current required certifications.
